About Celebrants & Ceremonies
What is a celebrant?
A celebrant is an independent, trained ceremony specialist who creates and leads personalised ceremonies for life's most significant moments. Unlike a registrar, I'm not affiliated with any religion or institution, which means your ceremony can be entirely shaped around you, your story, your values, and the atmosphere you want to create.
What's the difference between a celebrant and a registrar?
A registrar conducts the legal part of a marriage and works within set guidelines. There's limited flexibility around vows, structure or personal touches, and their time with you is often brief. A celebrant works purely for you, with no restrictions. Every word is written from scratch around your story. The legal paperwork for a wedding is handled separately, either at a register office, before or after the ceremony or on a different day
Are celebrant-led ceremonies legal?
A celebrant-led ceremony is not legally binding on its own in England and Wales, which means you'll need to complete the legal part of your marriage separately: usually a short, private appointment at your local register office. Many couples actually love this, as it means the ceremony itself can be held anywhere, at any time, with complete freedom over every detail.
Where can ceremonies take place?
Anywhere that feels right for you. A country house, a garden, a beach, a woodland clearing, a crematorium, a community space, or somewhere deeply personal. If it matters to you, it works for me.
How far in advance should I get in touch?
For weddings and naming ceremonies, as early as possible. Popular dates book up quickly, especially for Spring and Summer. For funerals, please reach out whenever you feel ready. Timelines can be short and I'll always do my best to be there for you.
Where are you based and how far will you travel?
I'm based in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. Travel within 20 miles is included in all ceremony fees. I'm more than happy to travel further afield across Essex, London and beyond and any additional travel costs will always be confirmed upfront at the time of booking.
How much does a ceremony cost?
Prices start from £300 for a funeral ceremony, £400 for a naming ceremony, and £750 for a wedding or vow renewal. Full pricing, including elopements and script writing only, is on my How it Works page.
What areas do you cover?
I'm based in Leigh-on-Sea and regularly work across Essex and London. Just get in touch and we'll work out the details together.
Weddings & Vow Renewals
What does the process involve?
I'll meet with you, by call, video or in person, which is my favourite method, to hear your whole story. How you met, the life you've built together, the feeling you want on the day. From there, I craft a ceremony that sounds completely like the two of you, so everyone in the room recognises you in every single line.
Do you write each ceremony from scratch?
Always. I never use templates. Every ceremony is built entirely around your story, your tone and your wishes. Nothing is recycled from someone else's day.
Can we write our own vows?
Absolutely, and I'd love to help you do it. Whether you want to write them yourself, craft them together, have me help you shape them, or prefer something more traditional and guided, I'll support you whichever way feels right.
How long does a wedding ceremony last?
Most ceremonies run between 20 and 30 minutes, though they can be shorter or longer depending on what you'd like to include. We'll find the right length for you.
Can the ceremony include humour?
Of course! Your ceremony can be warm and romantic, funny and light-hearted, poetic and reflective, or a beautiful mix of all of it. Whatever feels like you is exactly right.
What if we're not sure what we want?
That's completely normal and honestly one of my favourite starting points. I'll guide you gently through the process, offering ideas, inspiration and structure until everything feels just right.
Do you offer symbolic rituals?
Yes - unity candles, sand ceremonies, ring blessings, tree planting, tequila shots...We can choose something meaningful or create something entirely new that reflects your relationship.
Do you work with couples of all backgrounds, identities and orientations?
Wholeheartedly, yes. Love is love, and every couple deserves a ceremony that honours exactly who they are.
Can you liaise with our venue and suppliers on the day?
Absolutely, and I'd encourage it. I'll arrive at least an hour before the ceremony begins, coordinate with your venue, musicians, photographers and anyone else who needs to know what's happening and when. You just focus on getting married.
Will you travel for our wedding?
Yes. Travel within 20 miles of Leigh on Sea is included. For venues further afield, any additional travel costs will be confirmed at the time of booking and always discussed openly in advance.
Are children welcome to be involved?
Very much so. Children can take part in as many ways as you'd like; symbolic gestures, readings, promises, or simply being their brilliant selves on the day.
Naming Ceremonies
What is a naming ceremony?
A naming ceremony is a beautiful, personal celebration that welcomes someone into the world, into your family, or into who they truly are. There's no legal requirement, no set structure, and no tradition you have to follow, it's entirely shaped around you and the people at the heart of it.
Is a naming ceremony legally binding?
No, a naming ceremony is a personal celebration rather than a legal event. If you need to register a birth, that's done separately through your local register office in the usual way.
Who are naming ceremonies for?
Naming ceremonies are for anyone marking a significant beginning. New babies, adopted or foster children, blended families coming together, adults choosing a new name, or anyone stepping into a new chapter of their life. Every story is welcome.
What does the process involve?
I'll meet with you, by call, video or in person, to hear all about your family and the person or people at the heart of the ceremony. From there, I craft something that reflects who you are, what this moment means, and gives everyone there a chance to feel the joy and love in the room.
Can the ceremony reflect our family's culture, beliefs or values?
Absolutely. Your ceremony is built entirely around what matters to you, whether that includes cultural traditions, spiritual elements, symbolic rituals, or simply the people and moments that define your family.
Can we include symbolic elements?
Yes, candle lighting, naming ribbons, sand blending, keepsake boxes and more. If there's something particular to your family's story, we can also create something entirely unique.
Are children welcome to be involved?
Very much so. Children can take part in as many ways as you'd like; symbolic gestures, readings, promises, or simply being their brilliant selves on the day.
How long does a naming ceremony last?
Most naming ceremonies run between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on what you'd like to include. We'll find the right shape for your family.
Do you celebrate all family structures and identities?
Warmly and wholeheartedly, yes. Every family, story and structure is welcome.
Funerals & Celebrations of Life
What kind of funeral ceremonies do you specialise in?
I specialise in celebrations of life, ceremonies that focus on joy, stories, memories, personality and the legacy someone leaves behind. My heart lies in creating farewells that feel uplifting, personal and deeply human.
Do you offer traditional funeral services?
Yes. If your family prefers a more traditional structure, I can absolutely create that. Most families choose me for ceremonies that feel gentler, more personal and more reflective of who their loved one truly was, but I'll always follow your lead.
Do you create ceremonies for pets?
Yes, and it's a privilege. Beloved pets are family, and their lives deserve to be honoured with the same tenderness and care.
What does the process involve?
I'll meet with you, by call, video or in person, to listen to your stories and learn about the person you're remembering. From there, I craft a ceremony that reflects their essence, brings comfort, and gives everyone in the room a chance to feel the fullness of the life that was lived.
Can the ceremony include personal stories, readings or music?
Absolutely. Stories, readings, music, moments of humour, quiet reflection and personal touches can all be woven in. The ceremony is shaped entirely around the person you're honouring.
Can we include symbolic elements?
Yes, candle lighting, memory ribbons, planting something in their honour, a moment where family members contribute objects or stories. Symbolism can express love and legacy in ways that words sometimes can't, and I'm always happy to help you find something that feels right. There's no requirement to include it, some families prefer a purely spoken ceremony, and that's equally beautiful.
Where can the ceremony take place?
Crematoriums, natural burial grounds, funeral homes, gardens, community spaces, or anywhere that holds meaning for your family.
Do you work with funeral directors?
Yes. I regularly work alongside funeral directors across Essex and London and am experienced in navigating those relationships sensitively and professionally.
How far in advance should we get in touch?
Funeral timelines can be short. Please reach out as soon as you feel ready, I'll always do everything I can to be there for you.
Is every family welcome?
Always. Every family, every story, every structure. You are welcome here.
